Monarchs Blue faced off against the Michigan Bulls Friday morning in their second game of pool play. Having lost their first game, Blue needed to win in order to keep their bracket play chances alive. They went toe to toe against the Bulls but in the end, fell a run short in a 6-5 loss.
The Bulls struck first in the top of the second with two runs off of starter Nick Rodesky. But the Monarchs answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Timofeev got is started with a double and Austin Ritson was hit. Paul Zalar drilled a 2 RBI double that brought home both runners to tie the game.
Rodesky allowed two more in the top of the fourth, but Blue responded with a run of their own in the bottom half when Nick Broyles knocked an RBI single to score Tad Margolies. Zalar also was coming home, but was thrown out at the plate. That run would have tied it, but the Monarchs sat a run down going into the 5th. Rodesky gave up one more in the 5th, struggling with his command. He came out to start the sixth inning as well, but got the bases loaded with nobody out. Jake Drerup came on in relief and allowed only one of the runners to score in getting out of the jam. Rodesky finished with six runs in five innings, though only four were earned.
Down 6-3, the Monarchs came roaring back in the bottom of the 6th. Ritson walked, Margolies singled, and they were moved over on Ben Hammer’s sacrifice bunt. Michael Dushane delivered the big hit with a 2 RBI double to bring the runners home and the Monarchs within one.
Needing to get one more run, Blue got the bases loaded in the seventh, and a man on third in the ninth, but couldn’t manage to bring them in. Drerup pitched three clean innings, and Kyle Pilbeam closed out with a clean frame for the Monarchs.
With the loss, Monarchs Blue will not advance to bracket play on Saturday. They will be playing for pride in their second game of the double-header Friday at 12:30 against the Dix Hill Dodgers.

After dropping their first game of the tournament to Shannon Fence, Monarchs Gold had no room for missteps if they were to advance to bracket play. So they turned to starting pitcher Colin Meinzer for their afternoon game on Thursday against the Brooklyn Mariners. Despite a nasty wind and Meinzer not having his best stuff, Gold’s bats come through again.
Meinzer began the game and immediately gave up three runs in the first. Usually very in control, he struggled early giving up a walk and a hit batter during the first. Gold got one back though in the bottom of the inning when Adam Yunker scored on a passed ball for a 1-3 deficit after the first.
Meinzer adjusted and looked locked in after that going through three scoreless innings before giving up a run in the fifth. But the Monarchs made their move in the bottom of the 5th, and in a big way. Eric Yunker got it started with a leadoff bunt single and the Monarchs would never look back. During the boon, Gold went through 11 batters and scored five runs. Drew Kuns had a 2 RBI double, Brett Howard had a sac fly, Casey Winckowski had an RBI double, and Jake Cappelletty had an RBI single in route towards taking control of the game with a 6-4 lead. Meinzer pitched another scoreless inning in the 6th to finish strong.
Kirk Stambaugh came in for the 7th and breezed through the end of the game. The Monarchs tacked on another one in the bottom of the 7th on Cappelletty’s RBI sac fly, but the final score was 7-4 in favor of the Monarchs.
The Monarchs Gold sit at 1-1 as of now and will play their final pool play game Friday at 4:00 pm against the Illinois Jayhawks at Ned Skeldon. They will need to win to secure their spot for bracket play on Saturday.

Monarchs Blue opened up the World Series Thursday morning with some drama against Tri-State League rival Canton Terriers. Unfortunately for Blue, they found themselves on the losing end of a 15 inning contest.
Monarchs Blue, the visiting team, got it going early getting the bases loaded with one out in the first. Michael Dushane scored the first run of the tournament for the Monarchs on a sacrifice fly from Alex Timofeev. Kelly Barnes started the game for Blue. He struggled with his command early, walking the leadoff batter in the first two innings, and it cost him a run in the second, leaving the score at 1-1 after two.
Barnes settled in though and cruised through the third and fourth innings, while the Monarch bats were quiet, but they ran into some good fortune in the fifth. After Michael Fahle walked, Josh White dropped down the bunt to move the runner over, but the pitcher sailed the ball past first moving the runners to second and third with no outs. The very next batter, Paul Zalar slapped a grounder to third, but the 3rd baseman also made an errant throw to first allowing both Fahle and White to score.
Barnes gave up an earned run in the bottom of the fifth and an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. His finishing line was 6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 K. Jordan Kruse came on in the top of the seventh protecting a 4-3 lead. He breezed through the seventh, but gave up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth, making it 4-4 going into the 9th.
With the temperature and the stakes rising, Matt Vannett knocked an RBI single to bring home Dushane from second. The Terriers made another costly error on Timofeev’s infield grounder that allowed Nick Broyles and Vannett to score, while also giving the Monarchs what seemed to be a comfortable 7-4 lead with a half inning to play. However after a hit and two free passes, the Monarchs found Terriers surrounding the diamond and nobody out. Jake Rightnowar came on in relief, but gave up two hits and a sac fly allowing three to score and sending the game into extras. Both teams’ bats were nowhere to be found in starting in the 10th. Rightnowar got it going in the 10th and held the opponent scoreless over the next five innings. While the Monarchs only had two hits after the 9th inning, Rightnowar ran into trouble in the bottom of the 15th. After loading the bases with one out on two hits and a walk, the final blow was dealt on a sacrifice fly to deep left field making it an 8-7 loss for the Monarchs.
Thursday morning’s game was the only game for Blue. They will resume play Friday morning with a double header starting at 9:00 am and 12:30 pm at Sylvania Southview High School. The Monarchs will play the Michigan Bulls and Dix Hills Dodgers respectively, and will need to win both games to assure themselves a spot in bracket play on Saturday. |

Monarchs Gold and Monarchs Blue teams qualify for the NABF College World Series to be played in Toledo, Ohio August 5th through 8th.
Both Monarchs Gold and Monarchs Blue concluded play last week that is for the regular season, as the two teams successfully qualified for the 2010 LineDrive Sportz NABF College World Series.
Of the two teams, Monarchs Gold clinched their berth first as they finished atop the standings in the Toledo League with a spectacular 11-1 record. Led by a high-powered offense, Monarchs Gold brings a team .314 batting average with ten regulars all above the .325 mark. Among those are table setters for Monarchs Gold, leadoff hitter and shortstop Corey Lehman, and catcher Adam Yunker, who bats in the two hole. Lehman, at .340, leads the team hits and also has a .405 OBP. Lehman, who wears #1, is also tied for first on the team in runs scored, third in RBIs, and second in total bases. With 18 steals from the catbird seat, Lehman trails only his running mate Yunker, who has 20. Yunker brings in a .347 batting average and a .404 OBP. Yunker is also tied for first on the team with 21 runs scored. With power hitters like first baseman Drew Kuns, third baseman Brett Howard, and left fielder Casey Winckowski, who have combined to hit 62 RBIs on the year, Lehman and Yunker will need to consistently get on base. Their productivity will be a key factor in determining how far the Monarchs Gold will go.

Former high school baseball rivals have banded together this summer in pursuit of a World Series title.
Players from 22 area high schools who now play at the college level have teamed up as part of the Ohio Monarchs amateur baseball team. The Monarchs have Gold and Blue teams that compete in the National Amateur Baseball Federation. They are in the midst of a 50-game summer schedule.
Gold coach Ed Mouch, who also coaches at Southview High School, said his team consists of the best collegiate players who competed in the City League, Northern Lakes League, and other area conferences.
"They were rivals. But now that they've gotten together, they all get along very well," Mouch said. "When they were on opposite teams they were highly competitive with each other, especially in high school when you're competing for championships. But in this situation, they all respect each other and they all know what they can do."

Gold continued to extend their dominance over the Tri-State League on Sunday when they rolled past Shannon Fence with a 5-3 victory.
It was another day at the office for starting pitcher Colin Meinzer. Meinzer cruised through all seven innings allowing only three earned runs while striking out three and adding another CG to his resume for the season.
Gold struck first in the bottom half of the first when Adam Yunker came home on a Fence throwing error that allowed Casey Winckowski to reach base. Gold quickly added another in the second. Tristen Peffley reached first on a passed ball and stole second to get into scoring position. Two batters later Corey Lehman brought him home with an RBI single.
Meinzer allowed his first run in the top of the fourth, but it was quickly made up for as Gold tacked on one as well. Eric Yunker singled and moved to third on Ben Kauder’s single. Peffley got the RBI on a ground out to shortstop to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead after four.
