Monarchs Gold continues it’s winning ways with another victory on Sunday August 10, 2008. The Monarchs team opened up the game with one run in the top of the first to take the early lead. Matt Kaighin started the game on the hill for the monarchs gold in the bottom of the first. He started the game by getting the Maryland Orioles lead-off hitter to fly out to the Monarch second basemen. He would then walk the next hitter on 4 pitches.

This would prove to be meaningless as he would later be thrown out on an attempted steal with the count at 1 and 1 on the Orioles three hitter.

After he was caught stealing Kaighin got the Orioles batter to fly out  to right field to end the inning.

The second inning started with a triple by Cory Hornyak deep into right center field on a 1-2 count. He would later score on a single to center.

They would score once more this inning on a Brian Bilius double. This would give the monarchs a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.

Kaighin would get through the bottom of the second after getting a quick groundout to lead off the inning. He walked the second batter while getting the third to fly out to center followed by a single to left and a strike out that would end the inning and leave runners stranded at second and third.

Despite a single in the top of the third inning with 2 outs by Jake Cappelletty the Monarchs could not add to their lead. Kaighin though would continue to hold the Orioles in check with a little help from a great diving catch in right center field followed by a ground out to second and a strike out.

Brandon McFarland would have the only hit for the monarchs in the top of the forth with a double to right center. Kaighin would keep the game scoreless in the bottom half of the frame maintaining the Monarch’s 3-0 lead.

The fifth inning saw no offensive action for either of the teams and aside from a single in the top of the 6th by Cory Hornyak the same could be said about the top of this inning. Kaighin would continue the scoreless streak though he got into a little trouble with the bases loaded. He would get help from relief pitcher Tristen Peffley though who would do it all himself and get the Oriole batter to fly out to him just outside the third base line.

The top of the seventh saw an Oriole pitching change and no offense from the Monarchs. The bottom though saw a lead off walk that gave the Orioles hope before they were shut down on three fly outs that would leave runners at first and third.

In the top of the 8th the Monarchs would begin to hit the relief pitching of the Orioles with a single from Brett Howard on a 3-2 count. This would be followed by a blast to right field by Cappelletty that would leave the yard for a two run homer that would put the Monarchs up 5-0. Cory Hornyak then got an infield single to second that was followed by a walk to Brandon McFarland and (after another pitching change and a pinch runner for McFarland at first (Anthony Munoz)) a single to left would score two more for the Monarchs and make it a 7-0 game.

The Orioles would score their one run in the bottom of the 8th with a lead off ground rule double that was followed by a fly out and a pair of walks.

The following hitter would ground out to second scoring the run. The inning would then end on a strike out of the Orioles 2nd hitter in the line up.

The Monarchs could take on no more in the top of the ninth but would hold on giving up only one more run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game

7-2 and move on to the NABF world series finals Monday, August 11, 2008 at 10AM.
