First Win in Toledo League

The Toledo Hawks "Gold" squad started their midweek Toledo league action on a sweltering Tuesday night at Bowman Park on June 7.  Coach Ed Mouch got all of his players a couple of at-bats each, and three pitchers worked in a 7-2 win over the Genoa Rampage.

Starting pitcher Ricky Volante (Lake Erie/Tappahannock, VA) worked four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while recording six strikeouts.  Shutout relief efforts were turned in by Tyler Gibson (Bluffton/Sylvania), who worked two frames including a side strikeout in the fifth; and Lucas Willitzer (Adrian/Defiance) worked a scoreless seventh, with three strikeouts sandwiched around a yielded hit and walk.

All seven Hawk runs were scored in the first two innings, before the Rampage was able to summon some tougher pitching to face the Hawk lineup.  The big blow was provided by Brett Howard (Siena Heights/Toledo), who blasted a bases-loaded double to left-center in the first inning.

The Hawks are 1-0 after their Toledo league opener, and 5-0 overall as they head back into Tri-State action for the upcoming weekend.
