Earn 2nd Win in Toledo League

Behind a pair of fine right-handed pitching performances, the Toledo Hawks "Gold" squad flew to a 5-1 victory on a gorgeous Tuesday evening at Bowman Park in Toledo on June 14.  A tight pitching duel with Bedford saw limited scoring early; however, some timely offense in the middle innings gave the Hawks the ability to glide to their second 2011 league win in as many contests.

Starting and winning pitcher Mattie DeDoes (Oberlin/Ann Arbor, MI) struck out the leadoff hitter to open the game; then allowed two hits and a single run in the first inning.  However, after that he was dominant - the Michigander proceeded to mow down Bedford hitters for the next four innings.  DeDoes struck out six, walked three, and allowed no more hits in five overall innings of work.  Tim Corbey (Dayton/Toledo) mowed down the lineup in his ensuing two-inning stint; in the seventh, Corbey yielded a leadoff triple, then proceeded to fan the next two hitters before inducing a groundout to end the game and earn a save.

Hawk hitters started slowly, but achieved the victory margin for DeDoes in the third.  A leadoff single by another Michigan native, Mike Lollo (Siena Heights/Allen Park, MI) was followed by a fielder's choice and a walk to Phill Dysard (Tiffin/Toledo).  Drew Kunz's (Bowling Green/Oregon) infield single brought home the first Hawk run, and Dysard hustled to score the go-ahead run as the ball was juggled behind second base.

The Hawks padded their margin with a run in the fourth, and then two more in the fifth.  Levi Pauli (Defiance/Ottawa Lake, MI) hit a long sacrifice fly to score Eric Yunker (Ohio Northern/Holland), who had singled.  In the fifth, Cory Lehman (Siena Heights/Rossford) led off with a walk, scored on Kunz's double, and then saw Kunz score on a sac fly by Eric Croak (Toledo/Toledo).  Croak also hit a long blast for a double leading off the fourth, but was erased on a fielder's choice in that inning.

Overall, the Hawks moved to 8-2 with this second Toledo league victory.
