Squeeze Bunt Proves Key In Gold Victory

A little ‘small ball’ made a big difference in Sunday’s game for the Monarchs Gold against Northern Ohio. Ryan Mouch had the bases loaded for him with one out in the bottom of the 6th with the score deadlocked at three a piece. After battling the pitcher to a full count, Mouch and the base-runners executed a perfect squeeze play, bunting the ball down the first base line, and enabling the runner at third to score while Mouch beat out the throw to first. This proved to be all the breathing room needed for the pitching staff to shut the door on a 4-3 victory.

All the scoring happened in the first as Jake Cappelletty and Brian Bilius had RBI singles, and Drew Kuns scored from third when the catcher made an errant pick-off throw to second that sailed into the outfield. The pitching for the Monarchs started off a bit rocky for the first two innings giving up two runs in the first, and another in the second. The staff bounced back though and combined to end the game with five shutout innings. Defensive play of the game goes to Casey Winckowski in the top of the third when he gunned down the Northern Ohio  base-runner at home plate preserving a 3-3 tie and recording the Outfield Assist.

Monarchs Gold’s season came to an end at the semi-finals game against Dix Hill Dodgers out of New York at Ned Skeldon on Sunday evening. Gold had the momentum in their favor with a 3-0 lead through the 4th inning after scoring a run in each of the second, third, and forth innings and playing some strong defense.

In the top of the 5th inning the momentum had a significant change after the Dodgers started the inning with two singles, and a questionable umpire’s call reversal on a hit batter loaded the bases. Two more singles and a grand slam home run put the Dodgers in control with a 7 – 4 lead.

Gold was unable to put a hit series together to score anymore runs and the Dodgers with the momentum added two more runs in the 7th and 9th to clinch a trip to the CWS finals.

philGold advances to the quarter finals of the NABF CWS after a decisive win over the Long Island, NY Astros. Gold played the Astros in the championship game of the CWS last year and won in dramatic fashion 3-2. Today’s game eliminates the Astros from the tournament.

After the Astros started the game off with 2 back to back singles the Gold defense shut down the Astros with a 4-6-3 double play by Ryan Mouch, Brian Bilius, and Jake Cappelletty and a third out catch by Tristen Peffley in right field.

Gold started their offense with a leadoff walk by Adam Yunker who advanced to second on a pick off attempt thrown wild by the Astros’ pitcher. Yunker advanced to third on ground out to the opposite field by Bilius, and then scored on a RBI single by Cory Hornyak.

Both sides went scoreless in the second inning. Astros scored their one and only run in the top of the third after a couple singles and a sacrifice fly. Gold came back and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd after a leadoff walk by Yunker, hit batter by Casey Winckowski and a hard shot double by Bilius after Yunker and Winckowski were running on the pitch.
