The Monarchs Gold saved their best, all around performance for last. After relying heavily on their offense to carry them thus far in the tournament, Gold added the pitching and defense to their streaking offense to eliminate the Alton Indians 13-5 in the World Series championship game, their second of the last three.
With 10 players on the Monarchs championship team two years ago, Gold showed their poise and experience straight from the start. In the bottom of the first the Monarchs drew four walks in the inning. Adam Yunker did his part on the base paths too, not only stealing second and third, but becoming a serious distraction for the pitcher. Ricky Lizcano got the only RBI in the inning on a bases loaded walk. The other two runs scored on wild pitches to strike a 3-0 early lead.
Doing what he’s done all tournament, Brett Kuebler set out to give the Monarchs valuable innings and keep his team in the game. As with most tournaments, by the time you get to the championship game, most of your pitchers have already pitched multiple innings, and few are going to be 100%. With Kuebler pitching multiple times already, his performance seemed that much more valiant. Kuebler did have a hiccup in the top of the second giving up three runs to tie the game.
Fortunately for Kuebler, and the rest of the Monarchs, the Gold offense continued their torrid stretch. The Monarchs broke the 3-3 tie immediately in the bottom of the second on Drew Kuns’ RBI single and continued for two more the next inning. Eric Yunker got an RBI ground out, and Corey Lehman knocked an RBI double to deep right center scoring Brian Bilius.
The Monarchs began to break the game open in the fifth. Adam Yunker got it going with an RBI single. Then Kuns delivered a first pitch, two-run bomb over the left field wall for his second and third RBIs of the evening. Extending the explosion, Casey Winckowski belted an RBI triple, and Jake Cappelletty got a bloop RBI single to give the Monarchs an 11-3 lead after five.
As the Monarchs continued to rake, Kuebler continued his stellar performance through the seventh inning. He also got some aid from an exceptional defense, who had struggled with compounding errors earlier in the tournament, but was not only errorless through the seventh inning, but was making the extra effort for their pitcher, be it a double play, stops behind the plate, or diving for foul balls.
The Monarchs added another run in the bottom of the seventh on Lizcano’s RBI single to score Kuns.
In the top of the eighth, Kuebler gave up a run on a sacrifice fly, and then Kuns had a rare error on a throw to allow another run to score putting the score at 12-5 going into the bottom of the eighth. Kuebler finished with a line of 8 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, and 2 K as well as receiving the win.
Tournament MVP, and to be Bowling Green State University sophomore, Drew Kuns recorded his fourth hit, and fourth RBI of the evening in the bottom of the eighth and Derrick Garcia came on to relieve Kuebler for a shutdown ninth to close up shop on a perfect ending to a stellar season for the Monarchs Gold.
Winckowski, Lizcano, and Kuns were all named to the All Tournament Team.
Congratulations again to the Monarchs Gold team for the accomplishments this season and their World Series Championship. Good luck to all the players in school ball for the upcoming season. |

Monarchs Gold took Pool A winners, Kingsbridge Knights’ best shots in their Quarterfinal bout Saturday morning. The Monarchs continued their recent scoring binge early and never looked back outslugging the Knights 17-7 and advancing to the Semi-Finals on Sunday.
The Knight’s pitcher was all over the place and the Monarch batters made him pay. Corey Lehman got it started with a leadoff walk and was moved over on Adam Yunker’s sac bunt. Drew Kuns was hit, and Casey Winckowski brought home the first run of the morning with a first pitch single to score Lehman. Ricky Lizcano belted a two run double in the inning as well to give the Monarchs the early 3-0 lead. In the second, Adam Yunker brought home Eric Yunker on an RBI triple to add to the lead.
The Monarchs began trading punches with the Knights. The Knights scored two in the bottom of the second. Gold responded with two of their own in the top of the third. Lehman skied an RBI sac fly to score Brian Bilius, and Adam Yunker was able to come home as well on a Kingsbridge error. The Knights countered with a three run blast off of starter Ryan Mouch, but again in the fourth, the Monarchs came roaring back. Winckowski recorded his second and third RBIs of the game on a double, and Jake Cappelletty brought him home on a single to right. The Knights however again responded with two runs to put the score at 9-7 in favor of the Monarchs after the 4th inning.
Gold scored again in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Brett Howard and finally shut down Kingsbridge for the first time since the first inning. Pouring it on, Gold exploded for six more in the sixth. Lehman, Kuns, and Lizcano (2) all got RBIs and two more scored on a dropped fly ball. Kingsbridge seemed to run out of gas as the Monarchs kept it full throttle scoring another run in the seventh on Adam Yunker’s RBI.
Brett Kuebler, who relieved Mouch after the third inning, pitched through the seventh giving up the two back in the fourth. With a score of 17-7 after the seventh inning, the game ended via run-rule. Dating back to last game, the Monarchs Gold have scored in nine consecutive innings, as they appear to be hitting their stride at the right time.
The Monarchs will be off the rest of the day, but will play in the Semi-Finals Sunday morning at 11:00 am.

After splitting their first two games, the Monarchs Gold went into their last game of pool play Friday afternoon against the Illinois Jayhawks one win away from advancing to bracket play on Saturday. It wouldn’t come easy, but the Monarchs survive and advanced on a 12-10 victory.
Things got off to a rough start for the Monarchs. Starting pitcher, Ryan Stults, gave up a run in the second and three runs in the third before leaving the game. Stults couldn’t quite find the strike zone issuing four free passes in his two and two thirds innings. Tim Corby relieved him with two outs in the third, got the third out, but also allowed an inherited runner to score, which was charged to Stults as well.
Finding themselves down 5-0 already, the Monarchs began to chip away in the bottom of the 3rd. Eric Yunker hit a grounder towards short. The shortstop however made a wide throw past the first baseman and into the fence. Yunker was able to scamper to second on the play. Corey Lehman immediately brought Yunker home on an RBI single in which Yunker made a great slide at home to avoid the tag. Again in the bottom of the fourth, the Monarchs added another run. Catcher Adam Yunker walked and stole second. Drew Kuns singled him over to third, and A. Yunker scored on a passed ball cutting the deficit to three going into the fifth.
Corby also struggled to find the strike zone for the Monarchs. After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth, Corby wasn’t as lucky in the fifth. After issuing his fifth walk already, the bases became loaded again with no outs. Corby was able to get the Jayhawks to ground into a double play, but that still allowed a runner to score. He also gave up another run in the inning for a score of 7-2 midway through the fifth.
The Monarchs gave up a single run in the sixth and seventh and faced a seven run deficit at the stretch. In the bottom of the seventh, Gold began their climb back. With two outs, Ricky Lizcano forced the issue turning a bloop single into a double. Colin Meinzer reached first on an error and E. Yunker brought home Lizcano on an RBI single. Keeping the pressure on, Lehman singled and Adam Yunker walked to load the bases. Kuns delivered a big hit with a first pitch single to plate two and cutting the Jayhawks’ lead to 9-6. Brett Howard continued the rally with a walk to again load the bases. To complete the comeback Casey Winckowski delivered a bases clearing double to tie the game at nine apiece. The Monarchs then took their first lead of the game on Lizcano’s second big hit of the inning, and RBI single to bring home Winckowski. That capped off the eight run rally and gave Monarchs Gold a 10-9 lead.
Gold wouldn’t stop there though. In the bottom of the eighth, after Brian Bilius was hit and Eric Yunker walked, Lehman dropped a bunt that the pitcher sailed into the Monarch bullpen scoring Bilius. Later in the inning, Howard tacked on a RBI sac fly to give the Monarchs a 12-9 lead. The Monarchs gave up a run in the ninth, Derrick Garcia closed it out and seal the comeback victory.
Gold will advance as the Runner-Up from Pool B and play the winner from Pool A on Saturday morning at 9:00 am at Ned Skeldon Field.

After dropping their first game of the tournament to Shannon Fence, Monarchs Gold had no room for missteps if they were to advance to bracket play. So they turned to starting pitcher Colin Meinzer for their afternoon game on Thursday against the Brooklyn Mariners. Despite a nasty wind and Meinzer not having his best stuff, Gold’s bats come through again.
Meinzer began the game and immediately gave up three runs in the first. Usually very in control, he struggled early giving up a walk and a hit batter during the first. Gold got one back though in the bottom of the inning when Adam Yunker scored on a passed ball for a 1-3 deficit after the first.
Meinzer adjusted and looked locked in after that going through three scoreless innings before giving up a run in the fifth. But the Monarchs made their move in the bottom of the 5th, and in a big way. Eric Yunker got it started with a leadoff bunt single and the Monarchs would never look back. During the boon, Gold went through 11 batters and scored five runs. Drew Kuns had a 2 RBI double, Brett Howard had a sac fly, Casey Winckowski had an RBI double, and Jake Cappelletty had an RBI single in route towards taking control of the game with a 6-4 lead. Meinzer pitched another scoreless inning in the 6th to finish strong.
Kirk Stambaugh came in for the 7th and breezed through the end of the game. The Monarchs tacked on another one in the bottom of the 7th on Cappelletty’s RBI sac fly, but the final score was 7-4 in favor of the Monarchs.
The Monarchs Gold sit at 1-1 as of now and will play their final pool play game Friday at 4:00 pm against the Illinois Jayhawks at Ned Skeldon. They will need to win to secure their spot for bracket play on Saturday.

Former high school baseball rivals have banded together this summer in pursuit of a World Series title.
Players from 22 area high schools who now play at the college level have teamed up as part of the Ohio Monarchs amateur baseball team. The Monarchs have Gold and Blue teams that compete in the National Amateur Baseball Federation. They are in the midst of a 50-game summer schedule.
Gold coach Ed Mouch, who also coaches at Southview High School, said his team consists of the best collegiate players who competed in the City League, Northern Lakes League, and other area conferences.
"They were rivals. But now that they've gotten together, they all get along very well," Mouch said. "When they were on opposite teams they were highly competitive with each other, especially in high school when you're competing for championships. But in this situation, they all respect each other and they all know what they can do."
