The Black Hawks travelled east to play the Canton Terriers on Saturday at the Mount Union College baseball facility.

The opening game was not a pretty sight for the Hawks as 4 errors led to all 8 runs given up by the pitching staff. After two innocent outs in the bottom of the first a dropped foul ball led to the first three runs of the game. After the Hawks battled back to tie the score in the third inning another error with two outs led to 2 more unearned runs for the home team. The Hawks continued to battle and again tied the game up at 5 a piece in the top of the sixth. The defense let the visitors grab a 3 run lead in the bottom of the sixth when they scored 3 runs again after an error with two outs. Stephen Leskow (Defiance / Defiance) pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed only 5 hits and 2 walks to go with 4 K’s. Ryan Hotmer (Owens / Walbridge, Oh) was saddled with the loss going 1 1/3 with 1 hit and 2 walks allowed. The Hawks were led offensively by Tayler Glass (Glen Oaks CC / Petersburg Mi) 2/4 1RBI, Tyler Glass (Glen Oaks CC / Petersburg, Mi) 2/3 2 RBI and Colton Poncsak 1/3 2B and 2RBI. Final score of game 1 was 8-5 Canton.

Game 2 was definitely not a copy of the first game as pitching and defense dominated for both teams. The Hawks struck first with a run in the top of the first to grab a quick lead. That is all that Jake Rightnowar (Trine / Toledo) would need as he threw a complete game shutout. Jake was on top of his game keeping the Canton hitters off balance as he allowed only 4 hits and issued two walks on top of 5K’s. Offensively Tayler Glass, Ryan Hotmer and Andrew Poland (Owens/ Toledo) all chipped in with single RBI’s to lead the team to a 3-0 shutout and a split with Canton on day 1.

Sunday was spent in the hot sun at Pemberton Park in Youngstown against the Ohio Glaciers and was really a pitcher’s duel as the score was 0 – 0 heading into the top of the seventh when disaster struck for the home team. After allowing the Hawks only a double by Ryan Hotmer in the 4th inning the pitcher from the Glaciers walked Colton Poncsak. Tayler Glass came to the plate and put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Colton into scoring position. With one out Matt Vannett (BGSU / Bowling Green, Oh) lifted a fly ball to right field that was caught. On the play Colton bluffed a tag up to third and the right fielder threw the ball completely out of the park which allowed the run to score with two outs. John Fortunato (Case Western / Toledo) returned to the hill in the bottom of the seventh and allowed a runner to reach base but succeeded in getting the three outs to preserve the complete game shutout. He allowed 6 hits but had great control and only allowed one walk in the 1-0 win.

The Hawks made sure the second game was not without some offense as they staked Tyler Glass to a 4-0 lead after 3 innings. The offense continued to click and scored runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to build a 10-1 lead that held for the 10-2 final. Tyler went 5 innings in the hot sun and allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk to earn the win. Nate White (Defiance / Port Clinton, Oh) came in to allow 1 run in 2 innings work. The offense banged out 15 hits and were led by Nick Broyles (Bluffton/ Toledo) 2/2 3RBI and Ryan Hotmer 2/3 with 3 RBI. All of the Hawks had at least one hit in the game.

The wins move the Black Hawks to 11-9 on the year and the team will return to Bowman Park on Tuesday night at 8:15pm against the Black Swamp team.
