The teams from the Cleveland area were in town for 4 games with the Black Hawks. Saturday Shannon fence was at Bowman and wasted little time in taking the lead in game 1.
The visitors scored 3 in the first and 2 in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Cory Cannon (Kalamazoo / Blissfield) was on the mound for the Hawks and just could not get into a rhythm. Jeff Davis (OwensCC/Toledo) came in to pitch the final three innings and limited the damage to one additional run. The staff gave up a total of 9 hits and 7 walks. The defense did not help as the Hawks registered 3 errors. The offense could not get untracked and could only contribute 3 hits for game 1. The final score was Shannon Fence 6 Black Hawks -0.
The second game on Saturday started out as a pitcher’s duel and was 1-0 Hawks after three innings. The visitors were able to break through against John Fortunato ( Case Western / Toledo) for two runs in the top of the 4th but the Hawks bounced right back with 5 of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead. The key hit was a 2 run single By Colton Poncsak (Ohio Wesleyan/ Bryan Oh) who ended the day 2 for 3 with 2RBI and 2 RS. The final 6-2 win allowed the Hawks to split for the day.
Sunday, the Chardon Blizzards, came calling and wasted little time as they exploded for 5 runs in the top of the first inning against Stephen Leskow (Defiance/ Defiance Oh). The pitching settled down after the first inning and Stephen and Nate White (Defiance / Port Clinton) shut down the visitors the rest of the way however the damage was done. Again the offense could not get anything going. There were repeated times that the Hawks had base runners but hit hard shots right at the visitors leading to several DP’s. The final of game one was 5-0 for the visitors.
Game two started out in a similar fashion; with 2 outs the visitors struck for two runs to take a 2-0 lead after 1. The Hawks came back to tie the game at two apiece in the bottom of the third on a 2 out 2RBI single by Jordan Schwerer (Northern Kentucky / Whitehouse) . The visitors struck for single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. After the first two Hawks reached base they were sacrificed to 2nd and 3rd with one out. An infield grounder accounted for 1 run and with two out Nasri Hajjar (Ottawa Hills) came up with a clutch base hit down the third base line to tie the score at 4 apiece. The visitors would not stay down and after a couple of walks scored on a wild pitch to take a 5-4 lead that would hold for the win. The losses even the Black Hawks league record to 8 -8 and to 11-8 overall. They will be back in action on Tuesday night at 8:15pm against Bedford.
